At Port Harmon you can view the cliff called Indian Head. Most of the rocks in the cliff are a type called anorthosite. Anorthosite is found only in a few places on Earth. (It is more common on the Moon). All known examples are very old. These are about 1,000 million years old, among the oldest in the province. The anorthosite of Indian Head formed very deep below the ancient supercontinent Rodinia – about 30 or 40 km below the surface. Above them was a hugh mountain range, now all worn away.
Port au Port and Bay St George Area – ROCKS! This is a tale of plate tectonics. As you travel the Port au Port Peninsula and Bay St George area, you’ll encounter many eye-catching rock formations. This pamphlet describes four geologic routes you can follow to learn their fascinating story.
Formations are easily accessible and there is parking near by each site. Allow 2-3 days to thoroughly explore this trail. Please take photographs only. Leave the fossils for others to enjoy. It is illegal to collect pieces of the fossilized wood.
Phamplets can be purchased for $5 at the Regional Museum of Art and History and Debbie’s Video in Stephenville or by calling (709) 649-2038.
The story begins 305 million years ago on the super continent called Pangaea, near the Equator. See fossilized pieces of ancient Cordaitalean trees, including tree trunks embedded in the sandstone. Take the 1/2km return walk on the Fossil Foot Path to visit these rare specimens. Brochures can be found at the Town Hall as well as many other locations around town.
Harmon Seaside Links was originally designed as a 9-hole course for US servicemen stationed at the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base in the 1960s. The course now boasts a Graham Cooke designed 9-hole extension; the combined holes provide a challenging 18-hole golf experience unique to the island.
Bordering on scenic Bay St. George, Harmon’s ocean breeze adds a soothing feel to the course while at the same time requiring a player to heed the prevailing winds on a course that combines a true links experience with moderately treed holes.
With a panoramic view of the hills surrounding the Stephenville area, golf enthusiasts will appreciate the finer details this course has to offer. Challenging rough, deep greens and wide fairways provide a variety of options for player of all skill levels.
Harmon Seaside Links is located on Massachusetts Drive just minutes from downtown Stephenville.

St. Andrews Na Creige 9 hole golf course (Par 35) is situated in the beautiful Codroy Valley area of the southern portion of Newfoundland’s west coast. Surrounded by spectacular views of the Long Range Mountains and Little Codroy River, St. Andrews Na Creige offers stunning views to golfers and visitors alike.
St. Andrews is privately owned and operated by Patrick (Pat) MacIsaac, who has been involved since 1994. Pats involvement with the venue is unmatched by the closeness he has with his course. It is his personal touch that sets this property apart from any other.
The make up of this breathtaking course includes bent grass greens, a number of rock features including glacial boulders exposed throughout the property, a free-flowing brook that creates natural water hazards and an automated irrigation system.
The course itself was designed and built by Pat MacIsaac with the assistance of Terry Burns starting in 1995 and officially opened for play in August 1998.
